Kenya

There are several apparent problems in party politics in Kenya, both when it comes to organisation and practical politics. Party organisation often has to stand back to make room for day-to-day politics. One of the problems is the age and gender representation in political parties, where officials and engaged politicans are often men of age. Younger politicians often tend to adopt the politics of their older predecessors, and this leads to a thematic and political stagnation.

What we have done so fare

Since the beginning of KIC´s work in Kenya in 2001, efforts have been made to develop and educate local party organisations and politicians. The work has been carried out in cooperation with the National Democratic Institute (NDI), and projects have included participants representing KANU, Liberal Democratic Party, Ford-Kenya, Democratic Party, Ford-People and National Party of Kenya. During 2006, two projects were carried out. "Increasing Women Political Participation" provided training for 345 women from eight provinces in local organisation, communication, strategy etc. The women met both separately divided in their different party groups, as well as in a multi-party context. The other project, called "Strengthening Participation of Youth in the Political Process", aimed at letting young leaders grow and move forwards as active role models in the political process. 190 young people were trained in leadership, strategic plannig, media relations, etc.

Future plans and goals

KIC is now supporting the cooperation between KDU (the Young Christian Democrats) and the Kenyan youth organisation Youth Assembly, which is carrying out seminars and workshops where politically active youth in all provinces gather to learn and discuss leadership, democratic organisation and gender issues etc.

In a long-term perspective, KIC wish to contribute to strong parties that are fundamental for a strong democracy in Kenya. Strong and stable parties can lead to long-term improvement when it comes to human rights, the legal system and improved programs for development. KIC wants to contribute to a society where everyone has a possibility to participate and influence societal development.
