Moldova

Moldova, one of the smallest and poorest countries in Europe, has struggled since the fall of the Sovjet empire to find its way out of the many political, economic and social problems affecting the country. A significant percentage of the population work abroad, state institutions are ineffective and in many cases corrupt and there are huge problems with poverty, especially in the rural areas, which are predominant in the country.

Even after the fall of the Sovjet empire, the country was ruled by a communist government until 2009, when a pro-european, center-liberal coalition took over. The main goals of the new leadership is to conduct the necessary reforms of the state, judiciary as well as the economic and social system in order to approach the country to European standards.

Our previous expirience

KIC has been supporting different democracy and capacity building projects since 2005 , mainly through the Youth Foundation, an organisation linked to the Christian Democratic party of Moldova. The content of the project has been aimed at training politically active young people in topics like democracy, political ideologies, political communication and gender equality, preparing them to take on political assignments on a local or national level. During 2009 an emphasis was also put on strengthening the local branches and consolidating an efficient political youth organisation based on Christian Democratic values and democracy.

Plans for 2010-2013

During the next years KIC aims to continue working in Moldova on a broader, multi-party level with focus on topics like young people’s access to decision making positions in politics, national politics in practice, empowerment of women in politics, gender equality, media and neighbourhood-collaborations within the frame of the Eastern Partnership.
