Ukraine

Since the orange revolution in 2002, Ukraine has been trying to embrace new democratic ideals and form a stable political situation in the country. Unfortunately, the most needed institutional, democratic, economic and social reforms have been put on hold whilst several governmental crises have succeeded each other. The lack of a democratic culture in the country is one of the many core problems which has led to the current situation.

Since the spring of 2010, the country is led by pro-russian president Yanukovich, whose controversial, alleged election winning in 2006, became the starting point of protests leading up to the Orange Revolution. Yanuchovich is today facing the difficult challenge to bring the country out of the deep economic depression, reform the state apparatus and balance its foreign politics as much towards Russia as to the EU.

About our partner

KIC and KDU collaborate with the Christian democratic organization "Democratic Alliance" who was created in 1995 as a youth organisation for the Ukrainian Christian Democratic party of that time. After the defragmentation of the party, the organisation continued working as an independent organisation based on Christian democratic ideology. Democratic Alliance primary goal is to train and prepare young Ukrainians to become active in the political and social life of the country. The organisation was founded in Lugansk in the eastern part of Ukraine but has now regional branches in most regions of the country, with the head-office in Kiev.

Our previous experience

KIC and KDU have together with Democratic Alliance collaborated in a project aimed at improving young Ukrainians knowledge about democracy, the Christian democratic ideology, political leadership and communication. With this project, Democratic Alliance would like to create a new, democratic and value oriented political active youth, serving as a launch pad for future politicians of Ukraine

Plans for 2009-2010

KIC/KDU will continue to support Democratic Alliance during 2009-2010 in their aim to educate and prepare young Ukrainians to take an active role in the Ukrainian society and political life. Apart from lectures and seminars about democracy, ideology and the role of politicians, the participants will arrange round-table discussions with representatives from political parties, develop and implement mini-projects and work actively to have their views and opinions through to the Ukrainian media.
